Using Steady- State TCP Behavior for Proactive Queue Management

چکیده
This paper describes and evaluates the use of steady-state TCP behavior knowledge for proactive queue management (PQM). We show how routers can use flow parameters and the knowledge of TCP end-host behavior to intelligently mark packets to prevent queue build-up, and thus prevent congestion from ever occurring, while at the same time provide high link utilization and low packet loss. This is in contrast to traditional active queue management (AQM) schemes, where incipient congestion is detected early and then reacted to. Using a queue management algorithm that tracks TCP behavior allows queue sizes to be deterministically stabilized at very low levels, irrespective of the number of flows passing through the router. An advantage of our algorithm is that there are no parameters that need to be tuned to achieve optimal performance in a given scenario, thus avoiding repeated trials with different parameters – an approach common to other AQM schemes. Further we show that our scheme out-performs the RED and BLUE AQM schemes with respect to queueing delay and performs as well with respect to link utilization and packet loss. Design methodologies for TCP/IP based networks is one of the most challenging topic in research on telecommunications networks. The main difficulty consists in modeling congestion control mechanisms because it involves feedback from the network. In this perspective, in this paper we develop an accurate analytical framework for networked TCP applications supporting both Slow Start and Congestion...

AQM (Active Queue Management) mechanisms support the end-to-end congestion control mechanism of TCP (Transmission Control Protocol). Several AQM mechanisms have been recently proposed and studied by many researchers. One of popular AQM mechanisms is the RED (Random Early Detection) gateway, which randomly discards arriving packets. Although its steady state performance has been fully investigat...

In recent years, AQM (Active Queue Management) mechanisms, which support the end-to-end congestion control mechanism of TCP (Transmission Control Protocol), have been widely studied in the literature. AQM mechanism is a congestion controller at a router for suppressing and stabilizing its queue length (i.e., the number of packets in the buffer) by actively discarding arriving packets. Although ...

Recently, several gateway-based congestion control mechanisms have been proposed to support the endto-end congestion control mechanism of TCP (Transmission Control Protocol). In this paper, we focus on RED (Random Early Detection), which is a promising gateway-based congestion control mechanism. RED randomly drops an arriving packet with a probability proportional to its average queue length (i...

In recent years, various real-time applications in the Internet have been emerging with rapid increase of the network bandwidth. A real-time application traditionally uses either UDP (User Datagram Protocol) or TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) as its transport layer protocol. However, using either UDP or TCP is insufficient for most real-time applications because of lacking a smooth rate con...
